Character Name: Aki Izayoi | the Black Rose Witch
Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's
Canon Point: Episode 39 | After the destruction of the Arcadia Movement's building

Personality:The first impression one might have of Aki, is that of a confident, rather aloof young woman - of someone who carries herself with confidence and pride. That is at least the picture she tries to project to the world, who she pretends to be when she is representing the people, the person that gave her a home - Divine and the Arcadia Movement.

Beneath that frail facade, Aki is rather different - a mess of issues and insecurities, all rooting within the one thing Aki loathes the most about herself: her psychic powers. Upon being called a monster from the moment her powers first made themselves known - by her father of all people - Aki associates herself with that term and all the other names she is called over the years. While she is at first desperate to fit in, to be normal, just as expected of her, upon witnessing her parents happily interacting in her absents, she decides to give up all on trying what she can't do and lash out at everyone and everything.

The second persona she creates for herself, the mask she hides behind is the name and costume of the Black Rose Witch. As the Black Rose Witch she feels that she doesn't have to feel responsible for her powers, that she can use her powers and laugh at the destruction she leaves in their wake. As the Black Rose Witch she is cold and sadistic, eager to cause pain and enjoying to see other's suffer.

But while that is the person, she will show when angered or provoked, beneath the stoic layer and the mask of the Witch, Aki is terribly insecure about herself. She loathes herself, her powers and the mark on her arm; she truly considers herself to be what everyone else calls her - a witch, a monster. Even so, she craves exactly what every other human craves as well, friends, family, to be loved, to be able to love in return without hurting the people she cares about.

For those reasons, Aki has a tendency to become attached to people that show her acceptance despite her powers. She is extremely loyal to Divine (and by extension the Arcadia Movement) - while we see her question him about his intent for her to become the 'Jeanne d'Arc' of the Arcadia Movement as he puts it (a billboard in her own words) and about his treatment of Rua and while she seems to question her place after her duel with Yusei at the Fortune Cup, she ultimately considers Divine as her saver and as the only one who can grant her mind peace.

He is the most important person in her world, and even later when she finds out about the crimes he committed, some of them even while hiding behind the name of the Black Rose Witch (child abductions, -torture and even -murder), she admits that to Yusei that even while aware of those crimes and the fact that Divine was using her, she is still is glad to have met him and considers him to be invaluable to her.

After his (supposed) death, she feels lost and angry - with Divine gone, she has lost the only place she felt she could go to, the only person that had accepted and loved her as she is. She has no more reason to hold back, to do anything but unleash her anger at the world (In her own words: 'Now that Divine is gone, this world has turned wretched. That's why... I will... ruin this world!'). While she is eventually snapped out of that state of mind by her father and Yusei, until to that point, she is absolutely set to hurt and destroy, not caring about who gets in her way.

History: "I'm the Witch. A frightful woman who inflicts pain and enjoys doing so."

Abilities: Aki is a Signer, a chosen warrior of the Crimson Dragon, sporting the mark that symbols the "Dragon's Back Claw" on her right forearm. The Signer as a whole have shown to share a certain amount of abilities: A shield that forms either to protect people close to the Signer in question when an Earthbound God is summoned and or to protect them from other kinds of physical or mental attacks (for example explosions or from having their memory altered).

Another power the Signers have been shown to have is a sensory one: their mark activates when another is close by and/or in danger. It also activates when a Signer is dueling a foe that carries ill will against the Signer and the Crimson Dragon (the Dark Signer, all the robots from the future, Z-ONE, ect.). Usually this power allows them to tell the identity of the Signer in question and their approximate location.

At young age Aki developed psychic duel powers - the power to call card images and their effects to life and make the damage real (though it is restricted to needing a duel disc as medium to activate them). By the time of the start of the main story, she is considered the strongest psychic duelist in existence (according to Divine at least). Her powers are tied closely to her emotions - they activate when she feels sad, desperate or loathes herself or others and cause her to feel those emotions when they activate; basically trapping her in a vicious cycle.

Her hairclip somehow helps her to keep reign on those powers (again, according to Divine), but when Aki loses control over her emotions (like after being provoked by the Duel Profiler Kodo Kinomiya in the Fortune Cup), her hairclip springs loose and the viciousness and strength of her powers at very least doubles. If Episode 41 is any indication, Aki can also deliberately trigger this when she is in the right state of mind.

But even that isn't her full power; her true strength has been sealed away by Divine and can only released by him whispering a certain trigger phrase to her: "The entrance to the underworld is on the witch's island." The release of her true powers also places her into some sort of mind controlled Black-Rose-Witch-mode, in which she truly enjoys inflicting pain and causing destruction and I don't even; the Anime never really explained that one. orz

While Aki has close to no control over her powers at her current pull point, she does gain full control later on in the series, when she realizes the destruction they caused around her and found herself absolutely wanting to protect her father from them. It's also revealed in the strange mess that is everything post Episode 64 that she can also see Duel Spirits and that apparently that her true purpose of her powers is to heal people, but since I don't really plan on ever canon updating her this far, I'm not sure if that will ever become relevant. It can't hurt to mention it though, right?

Strengths: - Even though Aki already has an edge thanks to her psychic powers, even without them she is an absolute powerhouse as a duelist. Her plant deck allows her to fall back on a rather large variation of strategies, depending of course on which cards she ends up drawing.

- Psychic Powers. Do I need to say more? Just kidding. In the Fortune Cup, Aki practically leaves her first opponent beaten to a pulp without even trying. She is not one to be messed lightly with; her powers only grow stronger the more angry and upset she becomes.

- While Aki is extremly distrustful towards the world around her (and pretty much anyone who isn't Divine), once she's won over, she becomes loyal to a fault and extremly attached. This is a girl, who stands with those that earned her trust, who will not ever abandone the ones she cares about.

- Even though she mostly appears uncaring, she seems to have a somewhat soft spot for children - especially when they, like her, have some kind of ability. She states to Ruka that she knows what it feels like to be abandoned, what kind of monster loneliness can create and that they (the Arcadia Movement) cannot leave her be as it would Ruka down a similar path as Aki since she would be alienated from everyone else due her ability to see spirits and that Aki does not want that to happen to anyone else. She also seems shocked and disgusted by the experimentations of the Arcadia Movements, when she finds out, to the point where she couldn't stand watching.

Weaknesses: - The downside of Aki's psychic powers is, as mentioned before, her absolute lack of control over them. While she certainly knows what state of mind will make them grow, she has no idea how to turn them off and keep them from harming anyone. On the top of that, since her powers are feed off of her own suffering, pain and anger and cause her to feel all three things in first place, the continue to become stronger (her 'affinity for destruction' becoming 'impulses for destruction', as Aki puts it).

- Due the isolation she suffered in child and teenage years, Aki is extremly affection-starved, which gives her a tendency to focus herself on persons that accept her despite her powers. Divine uses that fact to manipulate her and win her absolute loyalty, to a point where she wants and allows him to think for her.

- Thanks to all the above, Aki has absolutely no sense of selfworth. She states several times that she hates herself, her powers and the mark on her arm and that she considers herself a witch and a monster. The mere idea that she can and even should love herself and not just define herself over the love others (aka Divine) show her, doesn't even cross her mind until her duel with Yusei. Even after that duel, while she seems to consider his words and even appears to wonder if perhaps he can save her, until Divine confronts her and reassures her that the only one with the ability to help her is him.

First Person Sample:

[Accidental Video]

[The feed activates when the communicator is sent crashing to the to the ground, showing a slanted angel of Aki and the man that claimed to be her father.]

If you'd just listen, Lisa, the doctors said it might take a while until your memory returns, but...

[Aki just shakes her head, tension raging through her body as she turns away, paying no head to device and the vase she had sent flying to the ground, in an attempt to make this man finally listen instead of having him just dragging her half over the town.]

I already told you, that is not my name. You, those doctors, you are all the same... liars. I know it was all real.

[Absently she reaches down, left hand closing around her right forearm, where that wretched mark branded her skin and marked her a monster.

The man behind her just shakes his head, as if he just has no idea what to do about her.]

We need to make this work-

[She snaps around, eyes narrowing at that man, that fake.]

Then what exactly is 'this'? What exactly do you want from me?

[She shakes his head again, trebling just slightly.]

I don't know any 'Lisa' and I don't know you! And I don't care about what you or these doctors think I'm supposed to be.

[The man looks taken aback, reaching out to touch her cheek.] Please, Lisa- no, you said it was Aki, right? Aki... I just want to-

[She slaps his hand away, glaring.]

Don't. Just. Stay away from me.

[With that she turns away, eyes drifting to the device on the floor. She crouches down, picking it up, frowning at the screen, before turning her face away and shutting off the feed.]

Third Person Sample: She had run.

She is standing at the window of the highest floor in the highest building of this City, impassively watching the men and women socializing around her. It's not a setting she is unused to, one she knows from her childhood, from all those times when her father (her real father!) had held a fundraiser at her house in her childhood and from later on, those small events Divine had held in preparation for them and for her, for the time when she would become what he asked her to be and lead the Arcadia Movement so they could change the world into a place that accepts them as well.

Still it seems inappropriate considering what she last remembers from the place she truly belonged to...

She is not going to linger on that.

She's already sworn herself after that first initial reaction, after panicking and screaming and crying and longing for Divine and being told that nothing of all that she believed real was actually just that. She can't linger on the past, and as much as she hates and loathes herself and these doctors and that fake figure that calls herself her father, maybe Yusei had been right back then, maybe it's time to decide for herself.

Because in this place, she cannot trust anyone, and even though they told her this party, this vernissage is held in her honors, that she is the one that made all those paintings (even though she knows she hasn't picked up anything like a crayon, never mind actual paint, since kindergarten days), she keeps herself apart from the crowd and lets her fake father handle the patrons that are eager to buy one of the pieces.

If she is to be totally honest with herself, she is confused, because while she is certain that all they told her in this place is a lie... all that remained of her curse right now is the mark on her arm - that wretched mark that had started it all.

She is confused, but... right now she has time. Time to observe this place and the people within it and also all those people that were the same as her, that woke up being told that their memory is a lie. Time to decide what to do, when she is done observing... whether to tear this place apart or whether to spare it.

Neither should be a decision easily made, after all.
